why do people wear something just because it is in fashion?

On this other question, all the self-proclaimed fashion experts told someone that nose studs are out therefore they should no tbe worn.

Shouldn’t you wear something because it looks good?

If something looks good in 1999, why wouldn’t it look good in 2010?

My logic is that if it looks ugly, it will always look ugly, even if everyone is wearing them.

  1. people like to fit in

mostly its because the people want to fit in with others who are wearing those clothes. I personally wear in style clothes as long as its not ugly :)

Dude if you don’t want fashion advice get out of the fashion section, and none of those people proclaimed themselves “fashion experts” so CHILL. Nose piercing was WILDLY popular for awhile, then it was eyebrows and tongues, and butterfly lower back tattoos, these things aren’t “out of style” they just aren’t raging trends anymore. Anyway I agree that it is stupid to wear something because it is “in style” like in the 80′s did they REALLY think shoulder pads looked good!?

  4. Sorry, but that’s not good logic in any scenario (movies, video games, or in this case: fashion). Something that looks good now can get tired real fast, and eventually improvements will be made or it will disappear altogether. Fashion doesn’t sit still; it’s always in motion and evolving.

Also, fashion designs reflect the era of which they are present in; and society’s interests are ever-changing.

The reason people do it is to either fit in, become popular, or simply because they like the look. But even as trends come and go there are some that I just overlook altogether (i. e: shutter shades–REALLY?!) because they look bad regardless of who says how “in” they are. But some (read: MOST) people just like to follow the croud and so blindly wear whatever the “experts” tell them.

But in several ways, this constant change is good, as it keeps people looking fresh and different from time-to-time. Can you imagine if everyone today looked like the trends that were so popular in the 80′s? Yeah me neither. . .

Fashion is also a series of much trial-and-error, which is why some trends stay (or evolve) while others disappear quickly.

Many people are weak-minded and follow the standards of others in order to appease them. This anti-idividualistic, submissive mentality calls for people to follow constant “trends” or standards that are set by other people in the first place.

  6. An overpowering desire to lead the group, or at least fit in with it, just like other social animals. The difference is that while other species determine which one they follow on basis of strength, we do it more commonly on a monetary basis.

  7. odds are yes!

  8. For fun and variety. And as technology and the ability to manufacture/mass produce clothes, the evolution in materials etc. etc.

The more technology advances, the better clothes and stuff can be mass produced and made available to the public.

So the stuff made in the 90s wasn’t as nice as the stuff made today. It wasn’t cut as well and the fabric wasn’t as nice.

  9. your right in part of it. some things that look ugly are just always ugly. but some things that look good in the ’60s, lets say, are just horrible looking and thats why they dont bring that style back. but thats the fashion experts.
since, i take that you are not a fashion expert, and same as me, where what you think looks good, not what others “experts” say look good.
dont listen to them if you have a problem with it. . its that simple. .

  10. Truth is simply what the majority of people perceive to be true.

If the general public concedes on a certain point, their collective opinion effectively becomes reality.

Therefore, if most people agree that nose studs look good, they become fashionable.

But if opinions change over time, for a variety of social and cultural reasons, they become unfashionable or “out. ”

Now to go back to your question, Why do people wear something simply because it happens to be in style?

I suppose it’s because of a lack of a personal aesthetic, a primitive desire to match your surroundings by resembling others as closely as you can.

Additionally, in your subconscious, fashionable clothing sends positive signals to others, while outdated looks give off an antisocial and abnormal vibe.

  11. i had that same thought about gladiator sandals and crocs.

and so many other “fashion” rages

and people say i dress weird

  12. the best of the fall collection

Fashion is indeed about wearing things that look good, that are creative and represent an aesthetic concept.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of the population does not wear and could care less for haute couture, so low-end fashion magazines, and lame, unoriginal brands (Ugg, guess, betsey johnson, ed hardy to name a few) brainwash them, create fictional trends based on designer collections, and then make the masses go out and by whatever is “in” to look “good”.
If something looked good in 1999 it probably still looks good in 2010, however the real world of fashion is one of constant creativity, of constant development of new ideas, so it moves on quickly (i mean each designer does about 4 collections a year), so its not so much about things being “out”, but more like that concept has already been explored and now everyone has moved on to different concepts and ideas, therefore making it irrelevant.
Its like art in general but faster, i mean the ideas behind neo classical or renaissance art are irrelevant today but you dont hear painters saying those concepts are “out”, but it is the same mechanism, always searching for something fresh.
