Use a toning shampoo instead of a conventional hair toner?

I am a natural dark blonde dying the hair a light golden blonde, but should I use a toner occasionally to maintain it from going overly brassy or just stay with my shampoo with toner inside it?

My hair is super long, and so I am wanting to not to damage it any bit further so I skipped having professional toners at the salon

  1. If you refuse to have a toner done in a salon you should stick to a toning shampoo. A lot of science goes into developing the correct formula to create the toner color you need.

Cosmetologists go to school to learn how to formulate these toners. We have lots of hours and dollars invested in this. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to toning. The stylist has to look at the persons natural hair undertones and factor in the color hair she wants. Then the stylist uses that information along with the condition of your hair (ex the porosity of your hair) to correctly formulate the toner.

  2. A good silver shampoo will do wonders for pulling brassy or orange tones out of your hair. Silver shampoo is a great way to gradually tone your hair without alot of damage. Its not going to make your dark blonde hair platinum but it will help you pull out the warm tones to assist in a cooler blonde. One of my personal favorites is BioSilk SilverLights shampoo. The shampoo is so light that you can use it every day but it packs a serious punch. I also found it to be a good clarifying shampoo since blondes can look dirty very easily.
