I am really keen on getting my septum pierced by the end of the year, but I was recently told that the small area of skin pierced is cartilage, and if it becomes infected just once. . . basically, it’s f**ked for good. Is this true? Do we have a choice of which part of the septum to be pierced?

They should just Pierce your skin
the placement of the piercing will usually be in about the same area, but not everyone has the same nose, so sometimes they’ll have to go through cartilage. that said, 90% of the time, they’ll pierce through a little piece of skin that’s surrounded by cartilage.
i’m not sure what you mean in the second part of your question, but unless necrosis sets in and your skin falls off, an infection shouldn’t really set you back at all after it’s healed. septum piercings are hard to get infected, as long as you just do what you’re supposed to. one of my favorite things about septum piercings is that they’re so easy and out of the way. clean it 2-3 times a day with sea salt soaks, and you’ll be fine.
